House concerts are the big thing for independent music right now, and not only is it a great way to see your favourite artists up close and personal, but it's a great way for YOU to get involved.
Hosting a house concert is easy- All you need is a good sized room, a dozen or so friends, and a coffee pot. If you prefer to do something more elaborate, some people have been known to host up to 100 people in their backyard, complete with barbeque or pot luck dinner. Just remember that this is a =concert=, rather than a party that happens to have live music.
The best house concerts seem to be for 20-40 people in a large living room. The artist may perform acoustically, or with a small sound system. The host provides coffee and cookies, and maybe guests bring their own beer or wine. The performer will typically play a set for a little less than an hour, followed by a 15-20 minute break to socialise, and another 45 minute to 1 hour set.
Make sure that your guests know that the artist needs to be paid! While some hosts feel uncomfortable "charging" their guests, a great method is to place a jar near the front door with a sign saying "Suggested Donation $10- All proceeds go to artist", or something similar. They will also most likely sell CDs or other merchandise.
